World No. 1 Iga Swiatek wins her third major title at the US Open while No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt wins the PGA Championship, including the first major of his career.
The US Open has always been the most prestigious major championship on the calendar. But in the past few years, the tournament has seen two of the greatest players of all time, Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods, finish in the top three despite finishing outside the Top 10 and playing in the tournament for the first time in four years.
Last year, the US Open saw one of the greatest comebacks in the history of modern championship golf. Former No. 1 Tiger Woods shot and birdie his way into the playoff last year to face off against defending major champion and previous runner-up Webb Simpson, and in a come-from-behind frolic, they finished two shots apart in a playoff on the third playoff hole at Congressional. The tournament ended with Simpson holding the lead and the US Open trophy, but Woods won a dramatic playoff to become the first player to win the US Open, Masters and PGA Championship in the same year.
But the greatest comeback in the history of the US Open happens this week. While the competition might be tough, the players at the top of the leaderboard are more experienced as they have won the last three major championships, and they should be a formidable team for anyone to beat.
Iga Swiatek comes to the US Open this week in her ninth US Open. She’s one of the most recognizable players in the world, and she has a lot of history at and around the US Open. Swiatek has won it twice before, and she’s tied for second place in that two times, but the last major championship she didn’t win was the 2007 U.S. Women’s Open in her home town of St. Louis.
Swiatek played well last year – finishing second in the four-ball in a playoff against Lydia Ko – and is hoping that she can go back to a playoff with Simpson. She needs that win to give her the confidence that she needs to be successful in the majors.
